I'm a pretty happy fellow, very keen for debates and the like. Arguementativeness has never bothered me. But recently, I ran into a group of Christians outside of a Mosque in Bellevue, WA (this is a group of missionaries from Cali). Like I said, I don't mind debates and the like - it could all turn out to be good fun. But this lot wasn't so big on debates, and what irked me was how they went about buisness. Although the Islaamic scriptures are in 'Arabic, the vast majority of Muslims are non-Arab and don't know any Arabic beyond how to make out the sounds of the script. Even than they don't understand the individual 'Arabic words. So what this group does is pass out a packaged product, all in 'Arabic (and the 'Arabic on the cover doesn't hint to it being missionary material). <BR/><BR/>I find this kind of deceptive methodology particularly crude - and that's what the Malays were complaining over. By using Allah and by not being clear on the cover, they manage to get their arguments through - the same is the case with Jehovah's Witness pamphlet for Muslims, the same is the case for the authors of "The True Furqan" (etc.) This methodology is simply seen as subversive and beneath us and I understand this to have been the cause of the complaint, not so much the use of Allah as a name itself.<BR/><BR/>When it comes to consulting Judeo-Christian scripture (including what the surviving forms of the religions consider heretical and apocryphal, like say Marcion's Luke) - than I have noticed this trend emerging among Muslims where they've shut themselves off from our predecessors.
