Walt, Mearsheimer Not On Point

Today's On Point broadcast with Tom Ashbrook discussed America's Cultural Clustering as described in Bill Bishop's "The Big Sort". Ashbook, Bishop, and Atlantic Monthly senior editor Jack Beatty discussed increasing social and political polarization in the USA. They mentioned how little crossover exists on issues between the Republican and Democratic Parties.

I called into the show at 11:40 (20 minutes remaining) and spoke with a call screener almost immediately to propose to ask about the Israel Palestine question, for it should be a lightning rod for political controversy. Yet, there is almost complete consensus between the two parties. 

I wanted to ask whether the situation was the result of the Israel Lobby as hypothesized by Professor Mearsheimer and Walt in The Israel Lobby and Foreign Policy or whether some other phenomenon drives consensus against the polarizing dynamic. The screener rejected my question and described it as something far too tangential to discuss so close to the end of the program.

Cambridge, MA, Saturday March 15, 2008, Sinah Harogaravski, Spokeswoman for Harvard Students for Israel, reported the dying words of Professor Stephen Walt as he lay crushed and mangled:

"There is a strong moral case for supporting Israel's existence..."

She noted that the Professor was quoting his famous paper THE ISRAEL LOBBY AND U.S. FOREIGN POLICY (p. 9). Saying, "He died that Israel may live," Harogaravski announced a fundraiser to build a monument to the fallen faculty member in the courtyard of the Harvard Hillel building.

Harvard Professor Crushed in Freak Accident

In a freak accident today on the strip of Harvard, Professor Stephen Walt was crushed to death under a Caterpillar tractor. The incident happened in front of the Kennedy Government Center. A school spokesperson said the land was being cleared for new law student settlements. The Dozer operater, A. Dershowitz, was on loan to the Harvard Israel Defense Forces from another department when the incident occurred. Dershowitz said he did not see Walt jumping up and down in a red vest in front of the tractor nor did he hear his screams of agony. Although ten eye witnesses disagreed, Dershowitz was not charged. Upon hearing of the incident the United States House of Representatives voted 420 to 15 not to investigate. In a related story today Argentina granted political asylum to Professor John Mearsheimer formerly of the University of Chicago.
